Learn simple steps to clean and maintain your coasters, including cork-backed hardboard designs like the Great Indoors Coaster by Gemma Correll.
Quick answer
Wipe coasters after each use, avoid soaking them, and store them flat to prevent warping.
Why different materials need different care
Hardboard coasters, like the Great Indoors Coaster, are sturdy but can warp if left wet. Cork backing adds grip but is porous and can stain. Knowing your coaster's makeup helps you choose the right cleaning method.
Step-by-step coaster care routine
- Wipe after every use: Use a soft, damp cloth to remove condensation rings or spills immediately. Avoid abrasive sponges that can scratch the surface. Damp is fine; soaking is not.
- Dry thoroughly before storing: Let coasters air dry flat, especially cork-backed ones. Stacking wet coasters can trap moisture and cause mold or delamination. Dry flat, never in a stack.
- Clean stains gently: For stubborn marks on hardboard, use a mild soap solution and a soft cloth. Rinse with a clean damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals. Mild soap only; test on a small area first.
- Store flat and separated: Keep coasters in a single layer or with felt dividers to prevent scratches. Avoid heavy objects on top that could warp the hardboard. Flat storage prevents warping and scratches.
